While standard fiberglass insulation would merely be “Green” because it insulates, some manufacturers are now offering fiberglass insulation that does not use a formaldehyde binder and uses recycled materials, both making it “greener.” Owen's Corning L77 insulation is one example. It “uses an innovative new acrylic binder that eliminates binder-related formaldehyde emissions during manufacturing, and after installation will not off-gas formaldehyde inside your home. And [it] contains 20% post-consumer recycled glass.”

Did You Know...
The U.S. Department of Energy estimates 80 million homes are under insulated today, and buildings, more than industry or transportation, are the No. 1 user of energy. You can save up to 20% on your energy bill by making sure your home has the proper amount of insulation.
A rule of thumb to see if your attic has enough insulation is to look at the attic floor. If you can see the wood beams or joists, you probably need more insulation. Owens Corning recommends an insulation value of R-50 for attic floors—about 18 inches of insulation. Calculate your current R-value and how much more insulation you need with Owens Corning’s Insulation Calculator.
You can combine layers of insulation to achieve a higher R-value. For example, an R-13 batt added to an R-30 will yield an R-43. Owens Corning L77 Loose-fill insulation is designed for open blow applications and applied through pneumatic means using a mechanical blowing machine. The insulation can be installed to an R-value. However, to achieve the correct R-value it is extremely important that the proper amount and minimum thickness of insulation be installed. Because R-values per inch vary by product, always check the manufacturer's recommended installation instructions and install the proper amount. Inches alone may not determine R-Value.
A combination of batts and loose-fill insulation is another alternative. A batt can be installed during the initial construction process, and a layer of blown insulation can be added later. This method is particularly effective in homes with roof trusses or hard-to-reach "nooks and crannies" - places that are prime for energy loss.
PROPINK® L77 BLOWN insulation is made of virgin PINK FIBERGLAS® insulation. It's used in new construction and in existing homes, typically in hard-to-reach areas. Since fiber glass insulation is non-combustible and non-corrosive by nature, PROPINK® L77BLOWN insulation offers significant advantages over other loose-fill insulation products:
It will not settle or lose its energy-saving** abilities
over time.
It does not require the addition of fire-retardant chemicals
that can promote corrosion of pipes or wires.
It will not rot or decay, support fungus or mold growth, or
provide sustenance for insects or vermin.
It produces a fast blow rate with less dust and static
* These recommendations are cost-effective levels of insulation
based on the best available information on local fuel and materials
costs and weather conditions. Consequently, the levels may differ from
current local building codes. In addition, the apparent fragmentation
of the recommendations is an artifact of these data and should not be
considered absolute minimum requirements.
R-18, R-22, and R-28 exterior wall systems can be achieved by
either cavity insulation or cavity insulation with insulating sheathing.
For 2 in. x 4 in. walls, use either 3½ in. thick R-15 or 3½ in. thick R-13 fiber glass insulation with insulating sheathing.
For 2 in. x 6 in. walls, use either 5½ in. thick R-21 or 6¼ in. thick R-19 fiber glass insulation.
Insulate crawl space walls only if the crawl space is dry all year,
the floor above is not insulated, and all ventilation to the crawl
space is blocked. A vapor retarder (e.g., 4- or 6-mil polyethylene
film) should be installed on the ground to reduce moisture migration
into the crawl space.
No slab edge insulation is recommended.
