Set your thermostat on the lowest setting that is comfortable for you when you are home.
Replace or clean furnace filters at least once a month. When the airflow is restricted by dirty filters you heating/cooling unit must work harder and this results in increased energy usage. Place a "sticky" note on the inside of door to your central air unit with the last date the filter was changed.
Use caulk and or sealer to close leaks around doors and windows. Gaps around pipes, vents, or electrical outlets are also places to look for when sealing out small airflow's.
common energy myths
MYTH:Buying an energy efficient air conditioner or furnace will automatically reduce by energy bill. FACT: This is true to some extent, but you wont realize all the possible savings if the equipment is not sized or installed properly.
MYTH:Cleaning refrigerator coils saves energy. FACT: While this seems intuitively logical, and a very small savings my indeed arise, effort to actually measure this effect have typically come up empty-handed.
MYTH:Halogen lighting is super efficient FACT: Although it's true that halogen lights use slightly less energy than standard incandescent bulbs, many halogens require transformers that can use extra energy, even when the light is off.
Attic Stairs
If you're in the average home, your attic door looks something like this. You have pull-down stairs with a thin 1/4" piece of plywood between you and your attic. If your front door looked like this, how long would it take you to replace it? The gap around this door results in the loss of half a ton of conditioned air per day.It also allows dust from the attic to force its way down every time the house pressurizes when the A/C turns on. There's no insulation over the top of this door and this 2' x 5' foot area will lower the effective R-value of your attic insulation by up to 20%
So if your attic door looks like that from inside the home, then maybe it ought to look like this from the attic side. Have us install an attic tent today for your pull-down attic stairs, scuttle hole or knee wall door. Not only do we caulk and staple it into place, we also use polyurethane foam to fill the large gap around the frame of the door. It unzips for easy access to your attic and cannot be seen from inside the home. Many A/C companies use this product to help balance your air conditioning system so it will operate correctly. When the A/C pressurizes your home, the attic tent prevents dust from entering your home.

How to Save Energy with No Cost
Here are some energy saving tips that you can do at no extra cost:
5 per cent of home energy is consumed by appliances being on standby. When you're not using appliances, unplug them or switch them off at the wall.
Water Heating Adjust the thermostat of your hot water cylinder so that hot water is 55 degrees Celsius at the tap. Have showers instead of baths and keep your showers short. You'll use less electricity on maintaining the temperature in your hot water cylinder this way.
Heating Close the doors and curtains of the room you're heating. Close curtains at dusk to keep the heat in. Use a thermostat and timer on your heaters so that they only come on when you need them and automatically turn off when they reach a certain temperature. Capture as much sun as possible - keep windows clean and make sure trees don't obstruct the sun. Put heaters away from windows so they heat the room more effectively. Turn off heaters in rooms you're not using. Block off your fireplace when you're not using it. Turn off your heated towel rail in summer months and when you're not using it. If you dont have an extractor fan, shower with the windows open to avoid moisture forming - dry air is easier to heat and better for your health. Put an extra blanket on the bed instead of using your electric blanket
Fridge and Freezer Let food cool down before putting it in the fridge or freezer. Don't overload the fridge with food. Avoid placing your fridge or freezer next to the oven, stove or in direct sunlight. Refrigeration counts for about 10 per cent of home energy use. Avoid opening the fridge doors more than you need to - take all the food for a meal out at once and shut the doors straight away. Defrost your freezer regularly to reduce the ice build-up. Keep food covered to reduce moisture build-up on the inside of the fridge. Wipe moisture from bottles and other containers before you put them back in the fridge. Use the most efficient temperature settings i.e. set your freezer at -18°C and your fridge between 2°C and 5°C. Leave space around the back of your fridge or freezer for air to circulate. Do you have a second fridge? Turn it off if you don't need it all the time.
Lighting Switch off any lights that you're not using. Choose the appropriate strength of bulb for the area - i.e. don't use a 100 watt bulb for a bedside lamp when a 40 watt bulb would be sufficient. Clean your lights and lampshades regularly to get the maximum light.
Washing Clothes Use shorter wash cycles in the washing machine. Wash your clothes in cold water Dry washing on your clothesline rather than in the dryer. Ventilate the clothes dryer to the outside. Clean the dryers lint filter every time you use it.
Other Appliances 5 per cent of home energy is consumed by appliances being on standby. When you're not using appliances, unplug them or switch them off at the wall. Turn off your computer when you're not using it. Turn off chargers at the wall when batteries are fully charged e.g. cellphones and laptops. Wait until the dishwasher is full before you use it - and use the economy cycle. If your dishwasher can generate its own hot water then use this function as it's more efficient than using hot water from your cylinder. Don't overload your washing machine (although its better to wash full loads than half loads) and don't forget to adjust your wash cycle to match the load. Use shorter wash cycles if possible. Make sure your clothes are well spun before using the dryer. Dry washing on your clothesline as often as possible. Try to only use your clothes dryer when you have to. If you're using the clothes dryer, fill it - it's more efficient to dry a full load and use the low heat setting on your dryer whenever you can.
